What’s A Mother To Do???

I am really at a loss as to how to get my sweet little two-year old to behave in Mass?  We have consistently taken him to Mass every week.  I really don’t think that he’s being intentionally bad.  He’s just loud and talkative.  He doesn’t seem to even understand that he’s misbehaving.  I really am at a loss as to what to do.  I love going to Mass as a family but I spent much of today’s mass in the foyer because he was even too noisy for the overflow room.  Being that we live close to our church, we will probably have to start going to separate masses and keep him home.  This breaks my heart because for years my husband and I attended different churches (I was Presbyterian).  One of the blessings of becoming a Catholic has been the unity that we enjoy in our faith as evidenced by worshipping together each Sunday.  However what we are doing now isn’t working.  I welcome any suggestions…

  • Don’t give up too soon. I’ve seen many people stop bringing their little ones and then have an even harder time when trying to re-introduce them to the reverent etiquette of worship. To tell you the truth, I can’t image a place that Jesus would rather your little one be, than with Him in His church.

I struggled with my first in the same way and then I talked to a woman who had a large family and seemed to never struggle with her children’s behavior during the Liturgy. She said that her husband would take the loud toddler out to the Narthex and not allow him to get down and run or play. Pretty soon, the little guy realized that it was absolutely no fun and it was much better to be quiet with the family in the church.

I know it’s frustrating. Believe me, I’ve been there.

  • He will grow out of it!

Also, Helen over at Castle of the Immaculate is running a series on prayer and children’s training–you will love it.

Knowing you, dear Heather, you have probably seen it already! You are always a step ahead!

    See you soon!
